1970s Yale 6K - Exploring the mechanical needs
We start with what I felt was the most in need of attention. Shifting and lights. Lights? Ok, it was fun to do, and Bud had the lights already.
Enjoy.

    Solinoid - contractor - motor starter Solinoid has a magnetic coil when energized performs a mechanical task ( door latch, valves, bell, ...etc) Contractor (relay) has a magnetic coil when energized performs a mechanical task of closing electrical contacts( switch or switches) Lights, control circuits, motors( if HP rated) ...etc. Motor starter has a magnetic coil when energized performs a mechanical task to close electrical contacts and also has an intrigal motor protective device incorporated with it. Some are resettable if tripped and have interlocking contacts of their own to interrupt the starting circuit

    The bar lock is the upgrade from the RV latch and an extra charge for all of the trailers that I've shopped. As for your awning and porch light ... you will exceed the legal width limit for all interstates and a lot of state roads too. I doubt they'll give you too a lot of crap for it but they can.

    I found short self-tapping screws work quite well for attaching the flat to the square tube. You still need to drill the holes, but don’t need to tap them.

    I think there might be a direct correlation between the size of machine (600 x 600, 400 x 400, 200 x 200 etc) and the oz/inch figure, bearing in mind its application (cutting just wood or aluminium?) Would like to find approximations for this.

    The first thing you should do is pull ALL the covers and hit it with purple shit (Castrol SuperClean) and a pressure washer, everywhere, just because. De-rat-nesting will make you feel good and also let you know for sure what all the wires do, and as my wife says, pretty is important. I would put the driving lights outboard on the forward cage upright. Who knew there was a race gear? I have worked on like four of these and never thought to check. score. (Actually, just HAVING a forklift is a score)

    • @sbirdranch
      @sbirdranch 4 місяці тому

      I agree with your wife. Pretty is better. Like I said, Bud wants to paint it already. In all cases we will hit that when it warms up. I'm about to make the lights a little more permanent right where you said. I need to get the wires inside the cage rail. I hate reaching up and grabbing it. Next video we address noises and carb. ~P

    • @BrilliantDesignOnline
      @BrilliantDesignOnline 4 місяці тому

      @@sbirdranch Even though you have halogens, I would spring for some LED type lights, which can be had dirt cheap. Tell Bud to go for lightening bolts or racing stripes, because now that you have 2nd gear, it will make you a triple threat 🙂 and make the other forklifts quiver in their boots. (We went metal flake purple, BTW)

    • @sbirdranch
      @sbirdranch 4 місяці тому

      It is only temporary if it doesn't work. And it is only a bad idea if it doesn't work. In both cases, zip ties are a good place to start. You can use them to hold two pieces of steel while welding, and the self remove by melting in half. ~P

    normal popular size DIY cnc woodworker used nema 23 112 long motors, because need be rich can buy nema 34 motors have super expensive buy, or if need better motors need buy nema 34 closed loop motors and price go 10X expensive than this normal open loop motors have. my cnc have same than you have SBR rails ballscrews but i use nema 23 2 Nm motors and have problem need biggest motor because lose steps if run feed and jogging speed too high. need more torque not lose steps. and then can run motor more speed not lose steps. minimum nomal woorworkers cnc need use 450 OZ nema 23-112 long motor. have normal minimum what can use. laser and 3D printer not need big motors because no need lot torque move. problem have need use nema 34 1200 OZ motors but have super expensive, normal hobby user not have budget buy thats. or perfect have nema 34 closed loop motors, thats include encoder can know realtime position ewerytime. but cost 10X more than normal steppermotors.

    Is the idler motor running in star or delta, no one seems to cover or mention that? Since you did such a great job.... is it still working and whats the idler motor wiring config? thanks

    • @sbirdranch
      @sbirdranch 4 місяці тому

      Well that is an interesting question...I don't know what wiring config it is in. What I'm curious about is (for this application), does it matter? i don't know that either. I have built 3 of these now and have never concerned myself with this detail. Also, the documentation I follow, never calls it out as something to address or compensate for. If you uncover something concrete, please post it back here and I'll pin the comment to the top for others. As for your other question...Yes. It still performs great. I used it yesterday running my sheet metal shear. As I mentioned, I've made three now with this information and they are all in good order. Good luck with your build if you go forward. ~P

    Serious question from a trailer newby but do i really need brakes on my trailer if it a small guy like 12' or less? Ive heard mixed answers.

    • @sbirdranch
      @sbirdranch 4 місяці тому

      It is all about the weight you plan to carry. Another consideration is how much tow vehicle you have. I can stop a much larger load with my 1ton duelly than I can with my El Camino. Most small utility trailers and single axle enclosed don't have them from the factory. I wouldn't consider a trailer the size of this one without brakes. ~P

    • @rsitser2009
      @rsitser2009 12 днів тому

      Yes! I have a 12' with no brakes. I also use a friend's with brakes, same size. Huge difference. I have an 06 Silverado 1500. Even empty the trailer probably weighs 1000 pounds +/-. That's weight that's pushing you if you need to stop quick. Brakes are worth every penny.

    I initially purchased and used an import tool post for much the same reason you discussed. However as my work evolved into more precise jobs doing tight tolerance boring, internal threading and using shaped reamers using the carrageenan I found my tool post was no longer zeroing like it used too. In checking it out I found tools were not only not repeating in height but also not being held parallel to the axis of the lathe. I checked the tool post which was still square and ran an indicator along the top and side of a test bar. No issues found. In checking the locking mechanism I found it was pulling the tool holders tight at an angle and inconsistent to boot. Frustrated with the added set up time I looked into and purchased a Dorian QCTP which locks the holders in place in a different way and has a warranty that repeatability would hold tolerance not only in height but also squareness to the position of the tool post. It has cut setup time to nearly zero as my DRO allows for positional storage for each toolholder. Time is an Expensive commodity, as is meeting customer expectations and my own standards. Especially in a Two person operation.

    • @sbirdranch
      @sbirdranch 5 місяців тому

      The speed is limited to a harmonic vibration that starts in the Y axis screws. They start to oscillate, then bind just enough to have the steppers skip steps. It is slow, buy honestly, I only notice it a little when doing a rapid...and Fusion but the kybosh on that in their free version. ~P
